What are the Best Things About Having a Cubby House?

In our last blog post, we outlined what we believe are some of the great reasons to get a cubby house for your kids sooner rather than later.

Things like encouraging children to become more independent, building their confidence, fuelling their imaginations, and giving them an environment to develop their social and communication skills.

Not to mention the big one: getting them off their electronic devices, off the couch, and outside into the fresh air and sunshine.

What people say about cubby houses

There’s no substitute for what a cubby can add to your children’s lives.

But you don’t have to take our word for it. Here are some of the things people have said about having a cubby:

“My daughter absolutely loves this cubby house! So much fun had in it already and she hasn’t had it very long. Will provide many hours of entertainment.”

“Our 2 young boys absolutely love it. They are spending loads of time there whenever they can.”

“It added a new dimension to our back yard and to our three-year-old’s play habits.”

“The only toy the kids use and enjoy every day, dollar for dollar the best money ever spent.”

“The kids think it is the best thing since sliced bread and (just quietly) so do I.”

“We are very happy and so are our kids and all their friends. You know when kids go to houses with pools? Well, kids come to our house to play in the cubby.”

Apart from the amount of enjoyment we get from seeing our kids laughing and having fun, psychologists tell us that pretending and other kinds of imaginative play are critical to healthy child development.

Research has found a relationship between pretend play and a child’s developing creativity, understanding of others, and social competence with peers.

In fact, play is so important to optimal child development that it has been recognised by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child

In case you’re interested in reading more on the subject, we found this fascinating and quite detailed article about a report called The Importance of Play in Promoting Healthy Child Development and Maintaining Strong Parent-Child Bonds.

It looks at not only the benefits of play but also things that have changed the routine of childhood and reduced play, and what we might be able to do to address those.
"You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation."

So, what are you waiting for?

Still need a bit of convincing? Here are some things people a bit smarter than us have said about play:

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” – Greek philosopher Plato

“You see a child play, and it is so close to seeing an artist paint, for in play a child says things without uttering a word. You can see how he solves his problems. You can also see what’s wrong. Young children, especially, have enormous creativity, and whatever’s in them rises to the surface in free play.” – American psychologist Erik Erikson

“A child’s greatest achievements are possible in play, achievements that tomorrow will become her basic level of real action.” – Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky

We all want our kids to be the best they can be, and encouraging them to play more creatively can be as simple as getting them a cubby house.
