Anyone who runs a small business has less than a month left to buy a substantial asset – something for the business that costs up to $20,000 – and immediately claim a full tax write-off.

As the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) explains in this piece in the Small Business Newsroom on its website:

“The write-off threshold of $20,000 has been extended to 30 June 2018.

If you buy an asset and it costs less than $20,000, you can immediately deduct the business portion in your tax return. The $20,000 threshold applied from 12 May 2015 and will reduce to $1,000 from 1 July 2018.”

You don’t have to take our word for it, in fact we suggest you consult your accountant, but if they’re not sure you can point them to these instructions for applying the $20,000 instant asset write-off in the Tax Professionals section of the ATO site.
